Secret lights discovered in deep sea |
|
The rare, branched, jellyfish-like siphonophores from more than 5,200 feet (1,600 meters) deep in the Pacific Ocean off California and Mexico are suspected of using their unusual red fluorescent lights at the end of their stalks to attract small fish. The unnamed species and its brethren were previously known to luminesce in blue-green light in order to startle and ward off predators. More at Animal Planet News. |
